Adult Education

SHERIDAN CERTIFICATE

This Adult Education Certificate Program is designed to respond to the changing nature of facilitating adult learning. The program is geared to people currently facilitating learning in a postsecondary, corporate or community training environment. The program focuses on the theory and practice of adult education by developing the knowledge and skill set conducive to the effective facilitation of adult learning.

Upon successful completion of this program, graduates will be able to design, implement, and evaluate educational courses and/or training programs for adult learners. Whether you are involved in teaching at the postsecondary level or in a training role in the public or private sector, you will benefit from the broad and intensive educational experience provided in this program.

The framework from which the Adult Education Certificate Program functions is that of adult learning principles “in action.” The specific goals of the Adult Education Program include:

  • enhancing the quality of the teaching and learning process
  • developing the requisite knowledge, skills and professional values needed to benefit your practice as an adult educator
  • providing viable learning pathways to future learning in adult education
  • encouraging the development of a “critically reflective” stance, as both teacher and learner, by examining discrepancies between beliefs and practice
  • creating a positive learning environment congruent with the principles of adult learning

In Collaboration with Brock University: Students who successfully complete Sheridan’s Adult Education Certificate program and who apply to an undergraduate degree program at Brock University will be granted 2 general university credits towards their undergraduate degree studies at Brock.

In Collaboration with CSTD: CSTD (Canadian Society for Training & Development) recognizes that Sheridan College’s Adult Education Certificate Program addresses the competency categories of instruction/facilitation, needs/performance analysis, instructional design and evaluation of training as outlined in CSTD’s Training Competency Architecture (TCA). The TCA is the common body of knowledge for the training & development profession. Students enrolled in this program are eligible for student membership with CSTD, recognized program category, and graduates are given a credit of one year towards the work experience requirement of the Certified Training Practitioner (CTP) and Certified Training and Development Professional (CTDP) designations. To register for membership or certification go to http://www.cstd.ca/ student membership category.
