Practical NursingONTARIO COLLEGE DIPLOMA The Practical Nursing Program is designed to provide individuals who want to enter the practice of nursing as practical nurses with the knowledge and skills needed for success in a rapidly changing healthcare system. Demand for graduates from this program is expected to be high due to the critical shortage of healthcare professionals in Ontario. Students will apply theoretical knowledge in clinical settings under the direction and guidance of faculty and pre-graduate preceptors. Clinical practice will be in regional hospitals, long-term care facilities or community settings. Following successful completion of the program, graduates will be eligible to write the Registered Practical Nursing exams. CurriculumTo qualify for this diploma, students must successfully complete the following 26 courses with a minimum grade of “C” for theory classes (with the exception of a minimum “B” grade required for Pharmacy Mathematics) and an “S” (satisfactory) for the clinical placements. Sections must be completed in sequence and courses within sections must also be taken in the order they are listed. *Prerequisite required - see course description. **These courses must be completed last in the section. All prior theory courses must be completed first. ***All program courses must be successfully completed prior to beginning Pregraduate Clinical. Note: Prior to commencing the nursing practice, and at the individual’s expense, students must obtain a certification in CPR (Basic Rescuer) and in Standard First Aid for adults, children and infants, complete a criminal record check and produce a current immunization record form and complete mask fit test. Admission RequirementsOntario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, including these required courses at a General or Advanced Level. Note: Applicants must have a minimum grade of 60% in English, Biology and Chemistry and a minimum grade of 70% in Math.
This program may also be subject to admission testing. Interested applicants who have their OSSD, but not all of the above admission requirements, may be eligible for entry upon the successful completion of the following Sheridan courses (Note: minimum "C" grade required in all courses except Math where a minimum "B" grade is required) Note: Sheridan reserves the right to alter Admission Requirements as needed.
